The Atacama Desert: An ethereal landscape

The interplanetary landscape of Chile’s Atacama Desert, the planet’s oldest non-polar desert, offers an otherworldly opportunity to broaden your photographic palette. Consider this your chance to get lost in a dreamworld on this 1600 km strip of land west of the Andes Mountains and hemmed in by the Pacific Ocean.

At sunset in Los Flamencos National Reserve, the distant ring of volcanoes that frame Valle de la Luna turns all manner of pink, purple and gold. Closer to San Pedro, Valle de la Muerte is just as mesmerizing with a towering sand dune and red rock formations conjuring stark images of Mars.

Laguna Chaxa, Miscanti & Miniques: Lagoons Galore

It’s an early wake-up call to capture the wonder of Laguna Chaxa by sunrise. Later in the day, we head to where the lava-flow from an eruption of the Miniques volcano separates the Miscanti and Miniques lagoons. This is your sunset focal point for panoramic shots of volcanic mountains and desert landscapes that stretch on forever.

Capture a flamboyance of Chilean flamingos standing tall in plumes of feathery glory. Zoom in on the wolf-like Andean fox. And on our Chile photo tours, there’s every chance of sighting a vicuna through your lens, a camel-like species closely related to the llama.

ALMA Observatory: Beyond the Milky Way

The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA for short), is the world’s most expensive telescope, costing $US 1.4 billion to build. A joint venture backed by Europe, the USA, Canada, Japan, Korea and of course Chile, this high-tech window to the skies and beyond, is actually 66 radio telescopes, designed to provide insight to star and planet formation.

On a clear night at 5,000m above sea level, you will be rewarded with crystalline views of the Milky Way.
